A tragic fire started early this morning (July 17th) in the auto garage on the corner of Center and Pierce in Riverwest. This fire quickly spread throughout the building, including the upstairs apartments, artist studio spaces, and galleries. A lot of friends and neighbors lives were deeply impacted today, making it out safely with nothing more than the clothes on their back.
Our thoughts and support are with you all. It’s times like this that we come together as a community and support our neighbors when they need it most.
We ask that you help out by donating any basic essentials that will help all the affected individuals in the immediate. Donations are being collected at the Riverwest Public House during all open hours. Any accessive food, clothing, etc. that aren’t needed will be donated to other local charities.
- non-perishable foods
- toiletries (all)
- loaner bicycle(s)
- art supplies (any and all)

If you can provide any non-tangible support for the individuals affected by the fire today (places to stay, warm meals/potlucks, hugs, etc.), please send an email with your contact information. We’ll provide them with all the resources we are pulling together as a community to help them in these hard times. From talking with most the individuals, they all seem to have close friends able to house them, but any and all support still makes a world of a difference.
On top of invaluable possessions and memories, many of them lost irreplacable artwork of their own and of others’ that they hosted in their galleries. That countless time and energy was lost to this tragic fire. Hopefully their insurance will cover most of their tangible losses, but that can be a drawn out, frustrating process. We’ll update individuals’ specific wish lists that will help get them back on their feet.
Milwaukee Artist Resource Network has set up an emergency fund to support these artists in this difficult time. You can make a tax deductable donation for these artists here, in person at any Chase Bank, or send a check to:
5407 W. Vliet St.
Milwaukee, WI 53208
(please indicate “Riverwest Artists” in the memo line)
We’re trying to have direct communication with every individual affected today, so please send an email, even if we’ve talked already. This includes tenants, artists, gallery-owners, individuals using the space for storage, neighbors, etc.
Benefit(s) are being organized as well to help get them back on their feet. Interested venues, businesses, bands, artists, or individuals that would like to be involved should get in touch.
Please share this with your friends, family, and neighbors. Thank you for your concern and support, it truly is appreciated and goes a long ways.
