If you’ve commuted or spent anytime downtown recently, I’m sure you’ve noticed that the Wisconsin Avenue bridge has been re-opened for around a month now.
To help celebrate it’s re-opening and showcase Wisconsin Avenue, Art Milwaukee and Newaukee, in collaboration with many area businesses and local organizations, are shutting down the bridge this Saturday, September 22nd and throwing a Wisconsin Avenue Bridge Celebration.

Complimenting Doors Open MKE, which is also taking place this weekend, this celebration is a great opportunity to help build community in the downtown area. We welcome anyone that comes down to the block party to stop by the MKEBKE table we’ll be sharing with Vulture Space and the Wisconsin Bike Fed, and if you biked down, check in with our neighbors at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee for a free beer.
If you don’t have your own bicycle to ride down, you can avoid downtown traffic and parking by taking advantage of Cream City Rickhaw’s pedicabs to help get you to the bridge celebration and navigate between different Doors Open MKE locations.
I’m personally excited for the free ‘water taxi’ taking people up and down the river to highlight Milwaukee as one of the best river towns in America, all the artists showing their work and doing live art (painters, sculptors, glass blowers, etc.), Kane Place Record Club at 7:45 (among all the bands performing), and just the great opportunity to celebrate the city of Milwaukee with friends and strangers alike right in the heart of downtown.
The bridge will be closed down from noon until 10pm, and there are countless things happening all day long on the bridge, riverwalk, and even the river itself. For a schedule of events, check the event’s website.
